- Newspapers, websites, letters, music, film and TV can all be censored
- Used to protect secrets, cover up mistakes, prevent opposition and control people's opinions
- Censorship was heavy during World War I as the government did not allow for anyone to talk about or support ideas that could possibly undermine the war effort or give away personal information
- Morale was at a high since only good news was reported during this time.

Letters
-Military info- Censorship is useful for wars because it prevents information from being leaked to the enemy. British soldiers wrote letters to their families during WWI. Officers censored letters by using a black marker or scissors. Anything that could be seen as useful information to the enemy would be blacked out or cut.
-Morale-
-What would be censored in a letter? Where they were stationed, how many soldiers were there, names of any soldiers/officers, what weapons they had, details of planned attacks, soldiers who were injured, soldiers who died, and bad conditions.

The Red Scare
The Red Scare followed WWI. As the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States intensified in the late 1940s and early 1950s, hysteria over the perceived threat posed by Communists in the U.S. became known as the Red Scare.
The second Red Scare occurred during the start of the Cold War. During this time the American government used censorship in order to avoid any pro-Communist activity around borders.
The Soviet Union made sure that its people agreed with these Communist beliefs. American products were banned as measures were taken to keep a strong political image. It is said that leaders who had fallen out of Soviet favor or died were removed from photos with Stalin.
