How Do We Receive The News?
- Fifty years ago: Editors and reports of newspapers
- Thirty years ago: list extended to field newspersons for broadcast networks.
- Today: the focus is switched to social media.
The Gatekeepers
People today are no longer seeking news. They are seeking information.
Before social media, journalists could be considered gatekeepers of sorts. Journalists were present to shape and control the flow of fundamental news to the public. But, an increase in social media results in the loss of any gates for journalists to guard.
When on social media, audiences are quicker to believe the news, true or not, that correspond with their beliefs. This leaves journalists in a difficult position. With opinions flaring, journalists have often become the target of harassment and have been called as far as the “enemies of the American people” by Donald Trump.

Is Journalism Really Dying?Because of the rapidly changing technological age we are in; the way products and information is consumed is also changing.
Actual, factual, and multiple sourced journalism is scarce and is becoming harder and harder to find. The unwillingness of many media sources to fund the ability for journalists to dig deeper is another reason for this decline in journalism. Due to the 24-hour news cycle social media creates, people already move onto the next headline before the previous one is complete. |
